I had a friend who bought some land VERY cheap and built a cabin on it. He loved it because he was a painter and had tons of beautiful scenery to paint. It also gave him the solitude that he sought.

Into the Wild reminded me of you because the character in the book sold everything and traveled around the country - mostly surviving off of the land but sometimes working. He kept a journal and that is what the book is based on. Sean Penn also produced a movie from the book recently.....although the book is more than 10 years old. Check it out!!!

Hey Melissa- I have read "Zen and the art ... " but not "Into the Wild." I'll check it out, though.

I have thought about Alaska, and want to go. But I don't think I could live there in the winter. Seattle is cooooold enough. The days would be even short there! (I think?) It looks like a beautiful place, and I hope to visit someday in the summer. I've heard land is still very cheap there, and maybe I've even heard you can get it for free under some qualification or somethin? Or maybe I was reading something old.

Yes! Happy Winter Solstice! Most people don't have a clue what that is or that the "Christian" holidays were moved to coincide with it.
Anyways, glad to hear you're feeling better.

Have you read "Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance", or "Into the Wild"? Both books remind me of you - - and if you haven't read them you should.

I am so ready to move away from the city and lead a more simple life, but my student loans are dragging me down.

Just wondering....have you ever thought about going to Alaska? I hear it's breathtaking!
